So many of my patients tell me that once they were diagnosed with diabetes, they felt as if “life was over!” For many of them, the diagnosis meant being done with desserts and sweets. As science and nutritionists have learned more about treating diabetes, desserts are not “banned” in the same way as they once were. Research has discovered that diabetics can, at times,
substitute an occasional dessert for another carbohydrate-containing food without causing significant problems with the management of your diabetes.
Finding healthy (and delicious) desserts can be tough. One of the most important steps we can take to reduce blood sugar is to honor the need for something sweet with something that is healthy and low in sugar.
That is why I have created my Diabetic Desserts cookbook to support not just diabetics, but anyone that is striving to avoid unnecessary sugar in their diet. It is packed with familiar favorites and delicious new recipes to allow you to treat yourself and make healthy choices at the same time.
- Cookies & Baked Goods
- Puddings & Gelatins
- Ice Cream & Sherbet
- Shakes, Pies and More
Of course, diabetics must remember that the majority of sweets contain significant amounts of
refined sugars per serving. Therefore, desserts should never be eaten at every meal and when
being eaten, moderation is always the key. Even when foods are labeled “sugar-free” or «diabetic
friendly», they may contain large amounts of other carbohydrates which can have a significant
impact on blood sugar levels.
Always work with your doctor or registered dietician to find out the amount of carbohydrates
you can consume in a day, especially those that are refined. The dietician will also be able to
help explain ways of incorporating these carbohydrates into your daily meal plan. «Diabetic
friendly» desserts should be relatively low in carbohydrates and calories and my cookbook is full of delicious options.
Remember to look for a higher fiber content to help in the management of diabetes. Always know that the journey of
the #HealthHero is not one of absolute deprivation but rather one forged with knowledge and exploration. Enjoy!
