Joan Moran

Joan Moran is an American author and educator known for her work in theater, film, and motivational speaking. She has explored various genres, including memoirs and thrillers, with a notable focus on impactful social themes. Her latest work, Once a Homecoming Queen (2024), delves into the challenges of senior alcoholism.

Joan Moran was born and educated in the United States. Joan holds two M.A. degrees in Theater and Education. Her passion for theater education led her to a faculty position at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), where she taught acting and theater history. In her fifth year as artistic director, she established the first year-round theater, Meadows Playhouse.

As a result of her interest in film, she became a production fellow at the American Film Institute in Los Angeles. Before completing her studies, Moran wrote her first screenplay.

Joan remained in Hollywood for 15 years, writing for film and cultivating a career as a motivational speaker and blogger. She brought humor, energy, and insights from her theater experience and UCLA yoga and meditation practice to her presentations.

Joan Moran debuted with her memoir, 60, Sex & Tango, Confessions of a Beatnik Boomer in 2012. In 2016, she published I'm the Boss of Me: Stay Sexy, Smart & Strong at Any Age, a compilation of her popular blog posts. An Accidental Cuban (2019), a thriller set in modern-day Havana, is another of her works in the new genre, currently being adapted into a streaming series.

Her recently published novel, Once A Homecoming Queen, presents a darkly humorous exploration of senior alcoholism through the character of Francine Fisher-Reynolds-Richelli-Freeman.

The novel has received critical acclaim for its insightful portrayal of addiction. Nancy Cushing-Jones, President of Creative Projects Group, praised it as a "heartbreaking story about one woman’s battle with addiction."

The book has been adapted into an award-winning screenplay by Joan herself. Additionally, Joan has penned a memoir about her mother titled Suddenly, I Was Jewish, The Life and Times of My Jewish Mother.

Joan Moran resides in Austine, Texas.
