Eloise Hamann

Eloise Hamann is an American mathematician, writer, and former political activist. She debuted with the thriller Inhabited in 2024.

Eloise Hamann was born and educated in the United States. She completed her BA, MA, and PhD in Mathematics at the University of Iowa, Creighton University, and the University of Minnesota from 1960 to 1964.

Eloise served as a professor and later as the department chair at San Jose State University from August 1985 until her early retirement in June 2007. Although initially discouraged by the demands of marketing, she transitioned into a second career as a writer after retiring. Her passion for justice also led her to become a political activist, a role she stepped back from after finding the associated anger counterproductive.

Returning to her love for writing, Eloise has penned several novels and short stories. She describes her first novel, Inhabited (2024), as a collaboration between Stephen King and Garrison Keillor in style. She has also written a trilogy about an intelligent civilization living under the sea floor, with the third installment focusing on the human discovery of this civilization.

Her engagement with the literary world extended to promoting her late son Shannon’s poetry and fiction posthumously. His collection, Deathdoubledactyl, was published by Pavement Saw Press, and she independently published his novel, Brad Pitt Won’t Leave Me Alone (2011).

Additionally, Eloise contributed to the literary community through various anthologies, including Tides, Las Positas College Literary Anthology, and Captivate Audiences to Create Loyal Fans and Glimpses. Her volunteer work with Child Protective Services inspired her to write a short story, The Foster Princess.

Her daughter, Heather, has also made her mark in the media as a former traffic reporter on KGO in San Francisco and a producer for the syndicated Dr. Dean Edell radio show.

Eloise Hamann lives in Dublin, California.
