Hanna Krall

Hanna Krall is one of the most significant Polish-Jewish writers and reporters specializing in the history of the Holocaust in occupied Poland. Her most famous work Chasing the King of Hearts (Król kier znów na wylocie, 2006), has been translated into 17 languages. It won the German Würth Preis for European Literature 2012 and the Found in Translation Award 2014.

The Belarusian 2015 Nobel Laureate Svetlana Alexievich called Hanna Krall a crucial influence that affected her work.

Hanna Krall was born in May 1935 in Warsaw. During World War II, Hanna stayed in Lublin. She miraculously escaped being sent to a concentration camp.

After the end of hostilities, she lived in an orphanage in Otwock and graduated in journalism from Warsaw University. After graduating, she worked for "Życie Warszawy" and "Polityka" among others.

Her work, due to past experiences, was mainly based on the Holocaust and the persecution of Jews in Poland. During the 1960s, Hanna Krall portrayed the everyday existence in Moscow as a correspondent for several years. She published numerous reports, which she collected in the debut book Heading east from Arbat (1972).

Her literary breakthrough came with the release of Shielding the Flame in 1977. It is based on an interview with Marek Edelman, a prominent Polish Jewish cardiologist, and activist who led the Jewish Combat Organization. This work can be considered a template for most of Krall's works that explore the complex interplay between Jews, Poles, and Germans during and after the Holocaust.

Hanna Krall has been honored with numerous esteemed awards both domestically and internationally, such as the Underground Solidarity Prize (1985), Herder Prize (2005), Journalist Laurels of the Polish Journalists' Association (2009), Gold Medal for Merit to Culture — Gloria Artis (2014), Julian Tuwim Literary Award (2014), and Władysław Reymont Literary Prize (2009).

Hanna Krall is still writing today. Her most recent book was Six Shades of White and Other Stories (2015).

Hanna Krall is married to reporter Jerzy Szperkowicz and has one daughter, Katarzyna. She lives in Warsaw.
